Plants can provide us with different sorts of food materials. In some cases, we eat the leaves of the plants, as in the case of lettuce and cabbage. In the case of other plants, we consume the plant roots, for example carrot, parsnip, swede. In many cases, the part of the plant we eat is the fruit, even though we may think of it as a vegetable. A ‘fruit’ is the part of the plant in which the seeds form.

Can you think of any vegetables you eat which are actually the fruits of a plant?
Examples include runner beans, aubergine, cucumber.
Can you name plants whose seeds we eat?
Pea plants (peas); maize (corn); haricot beans (baked beans).

Scientists believe that food plants could be grown on Mars

Pictures of the food materials that can be obtained from each of these plants are provided below. Look at the pictures of the food material produced from each of the plants, and decide whether it consists of roots, leaves, or fruit. Then drag and drop the picture into the correct section.

Certain plants can provide different food types. For example, some varieties of pea plant can give us green peas, which are seeds, but we can also eat the whole pods (as in the case of ‘snow’ or ‘mange-tout’ peas above), and these are actually the fruit of the plant. Another example is the quinoa plant, which can give us seeds and leaves.

If you put plants into groups as above, how could you show any plants that give more than one type of food material?
You could draw a Venn diagram; a plant that gives more than one food type would be placed in the area where two groups overlap.

Creating a Venn Diagram

Click on the button below to open the drawing canvas and draw a Venn diagram with circles for seeds, leaves, and fruit, and write in the names of the following plants in the correct circle (or overlap area): pea plants; quinoa plants; peppers; kale, cabbage (you can also add in more seeds, leaves, and fruit that you know of).

Research Exercise

Read the factsheet on ‘Cosmic Cuisine’ (linked below), and answer the following questions:

  • What sort of meals could you cook from the vegetables you have grown on Mars?
  • What are ‘freeze-dried’ foods, and what part could they play in your diet when on Mars?

Eating a Balanced Diet

Whether you live on Mars or on Earth, you should eat a balanced diet that contains the right amounts of certain types of food. Fill in the gaps in the table below to show what you know about three important food types, then click on the rocket button to compare your answers.
