yn means 'in'. Mewn means 'in a/in an'. In the house → yn y tŷ, in a house → mewn tŷ .
yn meaning 'in' cannot be shortened to 'n, even if it comes after a vowel, e.g.
Dw i yn y tŷ. (I'm in the house).
